Made in Michigan

The "Made in Michigan" slogan is pretty big around this area now.  The automotive industry is continually using it in their advertising as the Michigan automakers are slowly recovering from their troubles.  Families are talking about hoping it will bring more jobs back to the area.  It's everywhere.

The owner of the shop that I am putting a few pieces in asked me to paint a large frame she had.   The frame had a large  landscape oil painting in it.  I immediately knew it would be cool as some type of "made in Michigan" sign for her shop of all Michigan artists .  She loved the idea.

I grabbed a Michigan map from a local rest stop.  I cut the state out and inked the map to age it.

I added vinyl letters on the canvas and spray painted over the whole canvas.  While the vinyl was still on I also painted and distressed the frame.  I also added a light wash of black glaze.

After it dried, I removed the vinyl letters.  The resulting letters almost look like camouflage from the natural image underneath.  I mod-podged the map on top.  Lastly, I added a thin layer of tea stain glaze to blend it all together and hide the mod podge strokes.

I can't wait to see this in the shop!  May 1st is the grand opening!

Got any map art or furniture?  I'd love to see it!
