Pumpkin Planter

I was so intrigued by an inspiration picture that All Things Beautiful posted on her Facebook page.   It was beautiful succulent gardens growing on top of pumpkins.  These succulent garden pumpkins were just calling me.  (Here's the original source)

I saw the picture on a cooler day when I had just written the post about my succulent patio table planter.  I knew I needed to find a spot for the succulents indoors, since the plants are not perennials and won't survive in that pot for the winter.

The next time I was at Walmart, I grabbed a foam pumpkin from the fall decor.  I cut out the top.  I glued in a double layer of aluminum foil to create a barrier.

I trimmed clippings off the the patio pot.  I kept the pieces small.  I cut the pieces short and trimmed off.  On the plants that had chicks, I pulled out the chicks and trimmed off the roots.  The inspiration pic used a lot more variety of succulents, I used clippings from all the ones I had and 1 larger hen of one plant.

Succulents should root into moss that is kept moist with misting.  I added a thick layer of sphagnum moss over the foil.  I glued it in a few spots to keep it in place.

I just starting adding the succulent pieces one at a time into the moss.  I kept adding clippings until the pumpkin was pretty full with just peaks of moss showing.

I misted the succulents.  I know they are not in a pot that will last.  I just hope they stay green and lush until it's time to take the fall decor away and put the Christmas decor out.  I will mist them as I water my plants and hope for the best!  If they root, I will have new plants to find another new home for.

There are still succulents left.  These will go somewhere else.  I think they may end up in my indoor fairy planter.  A pot that has longer potential for the plants to make it until they can return outside next summer.

Have you created a succulent garden like this before?  Did they root?  My kids have already knocked pieces out of it.  So we will see how it does!  Fingers crossed!

What a clever idea. I've just got into fairy gardens and succulents in the last year, and it's impressive what unique projects can be produced.

Found your blog via Ironstone Nest. You have a great artistic sense. Consider me a new regular.

This is quite a nice and different take on the average pumpkin decor, love the added deer family! I'd love to come across those at the GW!

Fantabulous use of your succulents!! I have some extras that I never potted, so they are just sitting on the porch in their original pot. Guess where they are going to be planted? I'll probably use my succulent potting mix and place them in a ceramic pumpkin. Just gotta drill a hole in the bottom. Thanks for the fun idea. Visiting from Layla's party. :-) Sue

This is gorgeous. It's so unusual. I love the mix of textures between all the different succulents and the pumpkin. I had no idea it was so easy to transfer succulents.
